Supporting the Democratic Transition
In 2021, during Sudan’s transitional government, IFC member Rasha Elhassan partnered with Women’s Wings for women empowerment to launch a local initiative supporting the country’s democratic transition. The project aimed to raise political and human rights awareness among grassroots groups, equipping them to participate effectively in Sudan’s future, claim their rights, and make their voices heard.
The initiative brought together 30 participants, women and community activist, for a series of three interactive workshops addressing key issues affecting their lives and communities.
Scope and Outcome
Participants learned about COVID-19 transmission, symptoms, and preventive measures. As well as the pandemic’s impact on gender-based violence, highlighting the rise in abuse cases and providing information on support services such as helplines and centres. The next session introduced participants to human rights and the legal frameworks that protect them under Sudanese law. It emphasized equality, dignity, and civic responsibility as essential components of democratic participation. The last session empowered participation with practical tools to engage in political processes, understand governance, and influence decisions impacting their lives.
By the end of the workshops the participants reported a deeper understanding of their rights and a stronger sense of civic duty. Motivated by their learning, the participants organiazed a advocacy campaign, sharing knowledge and awareness with their communities.
