Empowering Girls through Understanding Human Rights

Andrea Rygh-Johansen

Initiatives in Afghanistan

In Afghanistan, we held an online course designed to educate girls and women about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in an engaging and interactive manner. The course utilized real-life examples and scenarios to help participants understand how these rights apply to their daily lives. Spanning two months, the course was organized into weekly modules, each focusing on a different aspect of human rights. These modules included video lectures, reading materials, interactive discussions, and assignments. All are aimed at deepening understanding and promoting the practical application of human rights principles. The project provided 20 girls and women with the knowledge and skills needed to advocate for human rights.

Outcomes Achieved

The primary goal of this project was to educate women and girls about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, while also encouraging them to become advocates for human rights and social justice. By the end of the course, participants had not only learned about their rights but also developed practical skills in advocacy leadership, and community organizing.

As the program progressed, the women began to view themselves as agents of change. By the end of the program, the impact was clear: participants had become empowered leaders and advocates within the communities. Additionally, the project enabled the women to establish a support network, where thay shared resources, ideas, and strategies to further advance human rights

Why we Undertake these Efforts

Since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in 2021, human rights have been violated, especially for women and girls. Women and girls have been fighting for their freedom and rights. As of March 2022, Afghan girls have been barred from attending secondary schools, and suspended from universities. Education is a fundamental human right and a key driver of social, economic, political, and cultural development. As these rights were taken from the women in Afghanistan our goal is to empower the women through educating them about their rights.
