Combating Gender-Based Violence- Gender-based Violence training
Andrea Rygh-Johansen
Initiatives in Lebanon
Our goal in Lebanon is to empower women in rural areas by providing them access to information about their rights and creating networks for them to connect. As well as focusing on building the capacities of women and girls to understand gender and combat gender-based violence.
This was executed through three training workshops on a rights-based approach to combating gender-based violence. The workshops provided participants with in-depth knowledge of basic rights from both international and legal perspectives. This enabled the participants to develop protective mechanisms to fight gender-based violence and promote gender justice and equality.
A total of 216 people registered for the workshop, with 80 participants- women, girls, men, and boys- attending the sessions either in person or online. The participants, activists, and defenders from various sub-districts of Lebanon engaged in interactive group sessions and lively discussions throughout the training.
Outcome
The workshops were designed to equip participants with constitutional, international, and legal references and frameworks that protect their rights. After the workshops the participants left with a deeper understanding of their rights, the legal frameworks that support them, and strategies to combat gender-based violence in their communities. As well as a network with other women activists in Lebanon.
Why we Undetake these Issues
Since 2019, Lebanon has been the scene of several political and economic crises compounded by multiple shocks that hit the country, including the October revolution in 2019, the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020, and the August 2020 Beirut blast. This multifaced crisis threw millions of Lebanese into poverty. Lebanese women and girls have been among those most impacted by the crisis, with a pushback in gender equality gains.
Our goal is to empower women and girls in Lebanon through training that educates them on their rights, with a focus on gender equality and combating gender-based violence.
